Camp Glam

Who says appearances can’t have glitz and glam!?

Camp Glam is a youth summer camp serving 5k-5th graders within Spartanburg County. Held in my hometown of Inman, Camp Glam strives to connect young women through leadership, team-bonding activities, and faith. I was able to attend Camp Glam during the summer of 2020 and during their past session this summer. During this event, I was able to speak about my social impact initiative “power in prevention” and educate the young women about their genetics.

Many people ask, “how do you teach children about your initiative?” The answer is that when teaching young children about genetics and mutations, its important to break down the function of genetics within DNA. My goal when speaking to children about my initiative is to get them to think of their genetics when thinking of their overall health. When I ask children how they stay healthy, they mention common health steps such as eating fruits and vegetables, playing outside, and drinking lots of water. Through my initiative, children aren’t just learning about their health, they are learning about the overall importance of their genetic make up and how it makes them unique.
